Selection Criteria for the

3rd World Traditional Wushu Championships

The 114 member-nation International Wushu Federation (IWUF) will host the Second World Traditional Wushu Festival in Shiyan City, Hubei Province, China from October 28 – November 2, 2008.  USAWKF will be sending several teams to participate in this event, and the selection criteria are described in this announcement.
 
 

 

1)  The primary 2008 U.S. National Traditional Wushu Team Trials will be held on June 14-15, at Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic, Connecticut during the 2008 USAWKF Nationals and 3rd New England International Chinese Martial Arts Championships.  Additional 2008 U.S. Traditional Wushu Team Trials may be held at centers across the country.  These team trials dates will be announced soon.  The location of the team trials and names of the officials in charge will be listed on the Events section of the USAWKF web site as they become available.  Please check www.usawkf.org for updates.

2)  All life-time school members of USAWKF will be eligible to serve as a host to conduct the 2008 U.S. Traditional Wushu Team Trials. Any interested school which would like to become a life-time USAWKF member and become eligible to host the U.S. Traditional Wushu Team Trials, please contact Sifu Randy Li, the USAWKF Traditional Wushu Chairman, by sending an email to: wingchuntaiji@gmail.com

3)  All team trials must be conducted by September 3rd.  All names of members selected must be submitted to USAWKF HQ by September 6th via fax to meet the registration deadline. 
4)  Each team will consist of not less than 8 people.  The organizer of the Team Trial, the onsite USAWKF official, and the judges present will determine who will be selected to the team.  Each participant must be a USAWKF member in good standing.   Judging will be based on the overall skill of the competitors. 
 

 

5)  The categories of competition of Team Trials will be consistent with the categories established by the Organizing Committee.  There are 6 age groups, 17 bare-hand routine divisions, and 11 apparatus divisions, with males and females competing separately. 

      A) Age Groups:

              1.  Group A: below age 13 (including 13)
              2.  Group B: age 14-28
              3.  Group C: age 29-44
              4.  Group D: age 45-55
              5.  Group E: age 56-66
              6.  Group F: above age 67 (including 67)
 
      B) Bare-hand Routine Divisions:

              1.  Taijiquan
              2. 
Nanquan
              3.  Xingyi
              4.  Bagua
              5.  Baji
              6.  Tongbi
              7.  Pigua
              8.  Fanzi

              9.   Ditang
              10.  Xiangxing
              11.  Chaquan
              12.  
Huaquan

C)  Apparatus Divisions:

6)  All athletes may compete in up to two traditional bare-hand or weapon events, the scores are set 6.0 – 6.9,  7.0 –  7.9,  8  and above. If he or she scores 7.0 and above on any one event, he or she will qualify for the team. Two men sets or groups with or without music do not require additional team trial if each of the athletes is individually qualified. For some of those who only participate in group events, the whole group will have to be tested and must score 7.0 or above to qualify.
7)  All previous U.S. Traditional Wushu Team athletes who participated in the 2006 World Traditional Wushu Championships retain the status as active U.S. Traditional Wushu athletes. They are automatically eligible for the 2008 World Traditional Wushu Team. Any active U.S. Traditional athletes may participate in the team trials if he or she chooses to retest one’s own skill levels and/or to offer additional support to the federation.
8)  The top three athletes (first place, second place, and third place) who are U.S. citizens in any Traditional category at the 2008 USAWKF Nationals and 3rd New England International Chinese Martial Arts Championships will be eligible and will be offered to join the 2008 U.S. Traditional Wushu Team.

 

 

9)  All participants will be required to follow the USAWKF’s travel agenda to maintain team integrity.  The USAWKF will charge an administrative fee for participants and observers who travel to Shiyan of $185.00 per team member and $245.00 per observer.  The USAWKF will use this administrative fee to offset the expenses incurred acting on behalf of the participants to ensure accurate room lists, registration materials, event registrations, flight information, visa requirements, invitation letters, communications regarding changes and updates and following up with members who do not respond in a timely manner.  We make sure that every member’s information is accurately forwarded to the international Organizing Committee.  USAWKF officials and Team Leaders who volunteer their services will have their administrative fees waived. 

 

10)  The Traditional Wushu Team Trials are for the athletes who would join the U.S. Traditional Wushu Team to represent our country to take part in the Third World Traditional Wushu Championships in Shiyan (WuDang Mountain), China; therefore, participating in the team trials constitutes a contractual obligation to go to China with the team.  Athletes who do not plan to go to the Third World Traditional Wushu Championships in Shiyang, China, should not participate in the team trials.  Once an athlete is selected to the U.S. Traditional Team, she or he can not withdraw without proper excuse and explanation.

2008 U.S. Traditional Wushu Team Trials

A 2008 U.S. Traditional Wushu Team Trials will take place concurrently with the 2008 USAWKF National Championships and 3rd New England International CMA Championships. Official rules and criteria will be published when it is available.

This event will select the team to represent the U.S.A. at the 3rd World Traditional Wushu Championships in Shiyan, China, October 28 to November 2, 2008.
